Questions for couples that open a conversation, not a test

These are original Zayenha Love prompts, not a psychological scale or a copy of another deck. Start where your relationship is comfortable and return to deeper questions when there is enough safety and time.

The short answer

Pick two or three questions at a calm time. Let each person answer in their own way without interruption or correction. Skip anything that does not feel right. The goal is to learn what has changed in your partner’s world, not to score answers or judge a relationship in one sitting.

Easy questions about today

Begin with the present. A short answer is fine; listening matters more than rushing to the next prompt.

  • What small moment this week made you smile, and why?
  • What task could I take on this week to lighten your load?
  • If we had one unplanned hour together, where would you like to go?

Deeper questions about closeness and differences

Choose just one when a topic feels sensitive, and allow either person to say, “I need time to think.”

  • When did you recently feel truly understood by me? What did I do?
  • When we disagree, what phrase helps you stay in the conversation?
  • Is there a topic you have postponed because the timing has not felt right?

Questions about your shared future

Do not demand a final plan in minutes; open the door to a later decision.

  • What small habit would you like us to keep next year?
  • What personal goal would you like support with, and what kind of support works?
  • What decision should we make together before it becomes urgent?

A gentle conversation game for couples

Write your favorite prompts on small cards and take turns drawing one. Give answers time without a timer or score, and let either person pass. If a prompt sparks conflict, pause the game and return to a calm conversation rather than treating it as a contest.

If you want a couples game app, Love offers interactive conversation cards after sign-in, not a library of competitive games. The public questions here also work without installing anything.

Common questions

Do these questions suit engaged couples?

Some lighter prompts do, but money, family, and values are covered more specifically in the premarital discussion guide.

Must we answer every question?

No. Skip anything uncomfortable or ill-timed and return only if both of you want to.
